Ken Lear shares some of his favorite morning habits for having a great day at work.

How you spend your morning sets the tone for your entire day — and when you’re in the business of building relationships with clients, customers, or coworkers — well, being grumpy just doesn’t work.

Here are 4 habits to add to your morning routine that will increase your chance of having a wonderful workday — and not one of them involves caffeine!

1) Take time for YOU

This one is directly out of the Ken Lear play book: take some time just for you each morning before the day’s chaos ensues. Use this time to think through your day and shake off any negative energy you might have woken up with. Ken’s routine? He works out, sits in the sauna for 5-10 minutes, has a shake, and listens to blood-pumping happy music in the car.

2) Eat a healthy breakfast

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. If you already make time to eat breakfast each day, good for you! You can take it a step further by incorporating superfoods into your morning meal. Foods like blueberries, avocados, dark chocolate, nuts, beets, and broccoli are are packed with antioxidants, which help increase the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain, boosting your concentration and preparing you for the workday.

3) Spend your morning commute time productively

Depending on the form of transportation that you take, try reading a book or listening to an audiobook or podcast during your commute. You may not be able to whip out your laptop and update spreadsheets or send emails on your way to work, but you can still use those few extra minutes strategically. Stimulating your brain with educational or uplifting content will help ease you into the right frame of mind before you walk through your office doors and get you ready to face whatever obstacles the day may bring.

4) Be early to work

One of the best ways to ensure that you’ll have a successful and productive workday is to get to the office a little bit early. Whether you choose to arrive 10 minutes, 30 minutes, or an entire hour early, having that extra time in the morning to plan and prepare for the day will help you to tackle your to-do list in the most efficient way possible, ensuring a great day ahead.
